NLab: Lubelskie-Nevada Acceleration Bridge

The United States has always been perceived as a country that has the world's largest and most technologically advanced economy. The conditions for doing business there are very appealing,  while the US position in foreign trade of Poland is constantly increasing. In 2014, the volume of trade between Poland and US exceeded $ 10.3 billion and United States was the 13th partner in exports with a 2.2% share. The US is a global importer, while having an open market with relatively low customs duty. The position attained on the American market opens the door to opportunities on a global scale. Therefore, establishing trade relations with the US is a great chance for entrepreneurs from the Lubelskie Voivodeship.

NLab: Lubelskie-Nevada Acceleration Bridge Conference has been organized by the local government of Lubelskie Voivodeship and State of Nevada. We are honoured to host Brian Sandoval - Governor of Nevada and Chairman of of the National Governors Association, together with accompanying delegation, given that such visits are quite uncommon. The NLab: Lubelskie-Nevada Acceleration Bridge will consist of a few panel discussions on various subjects, which will provide potential cooperation niches between Poland and US, including the advantages of partnerships between academic and business environments. In addition to outstanding representatives from Nevada, we will have experts present from different regions of Poland and Lubelskie Voivodeship.  Discussion panels will cover the following topics:

  • Accelerating / Business Support Institutions
  • New technologies in agriculture and water management
  • Innovation and Refinement in Video Gaming
  • Vehicle and Airspace Autonomous Systems
  • Photonics

One of the main and key points on the agenda will be signing of a Letter of Intent, which will aim to implement an international acceleration program for ambitious startups from our region.

Lubelskie Voivodeship and State of Nevada - the origin of the bilateral cooperation

The first incoming trade mission from Nevada took place in July 2015. The event aimed at establishing and developing business contacts between entrepreneurs and business environment institutions from Lubelskie Voivodeship and State of Nevada. Nevada was represented by companies and agencies, including: Northern Nevada Development Authority, Carson City Chamber of Commerce, that brings together a number of producers interested in collaboration based on setting up joint ventures. Numerous business seminars, B2B conversations and study visits were held as part of the trade mission.

On July 30, 2015, a letter of intent was signed between the Lubelskie Voivodeship and the State of Nevada on the premises of the Ministry of Economy in Warsaw. In the presence of then Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechocinski, the protocol was signed by Sławomir Sosnowski, Marshal of Lubelskie Voivodeship and  Brian Sandoval, The Governor of the State of Nevada. It is a document that initiates the establishment of partnership and friendly relations, as well as the strengthening of economic cooperation between the regions.

Another point in the history of cooperation was an outgoing multisectoral trade mission for entrepreneurs from Lubelskie Voivodeship to Nevada, which took place in November 2015.  Businessmen from the software, IT, engineering (including aviation and autonomous systems) sectors, as well as pharmaceutical and medical device producers participated in the trade mission. During this trip Arkadiusz Bratkowski, member of the Management Board of Lubelskie Voivodeship signed a letter of intent of cooperation with  Northern Nevada Development Authority – an agency for the economic development of the Sierra region.

The State of Nevada is called the American tax haven - it is one of the few states in the US without the state Personal Income Tax (PIT) and Corporate Income Tax (CIT). In addition, authorities of individual counties can make tax exemptions from the invested capital. Therefore, with this in mind, the Management Board of Lubelskie Voivodeship has established relations with Nevada, The trade mission, held on 14-21 April 2016, was a continuation of the activities commenced by the Lubelskie Voivodeship to help businesses from our region to enter the American market. In Lublin we hosted companies from Nevada: (Coral LLC, HLSL Institute, JadinTech, Robot Army, AHA Management and Consulting, K2 Energy Solutions, Inc, Solar LED Safety Strips) and representatives of Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development headed by Kristopher Sanchez.

Between 14 and 21 October 2016, a group of scientists from the Lublin University of Technology held a study visit to the United States. During the trip representatives of the Lublin University had the opportunity to meet representatives of the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development, city transportation companies, American universities and chambers of commerce. They were also given the opportunity to visit scientific and research centers.

Visiting the University of Nevada Las Vegas in the presence of John Petkus, Honorary Consul of Poland in Nevada, representatives of  the Lublin University of Technology and the University of Nevada Las Vegas signed a Letter of Intent outlining the educational and business cooperation between Lubelskie Voivodeship and Nevada. We see tremendous potential for collaboration between our regions, especially in transport technologies, drones and renewable energy. The group from the Lublin University of Technology also took part in World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology conference in San Francisco.
